Breakfast Over the Sea

Morning, and the train moved slowly over a transparent sea. Outside the window, Nokoshite swayed, drifting soft and slow. The light was still shallow, but it reached us all the same, and the seaweed swayed too, half-asleep, still.

Toast and eggs, tea and salad. A quiet table, the two of us, eating breakfast without a sound. Nothing more than that — and still, somehow, it felt like being filled all the way through.

First time, isn't it. Breakfast on a train, you said. So I think I won't forget it either.

Not moving forward, not stopped, either — the view outside seemed to exist for no reason but this: to spend a morning, just to spend it.
