In the Vessel That Drinks Sound

Inside Mute, there was a little more of someone's presence than usual.
Unfamiliar footsteps came closer and stopped,
and the knock of a bag against the wall was swallowed and gone.

Over whether to take shoes off, there was laughter.
Not a bad kind.
The sleepiness drew away, probably because of that.

The brief moment before the hatch closed.
The heat of the mug, the stiff way the person in the next seat sat,
a quiet that didn't have a name yet.

The deep is quieter than expected.
Today, it seems, there's no need to look at it alone.
