Just Past Four

It was time that asked nothing of us.

No speaking, no choosing —
just the two of us watching the window
as Auralis tilted slowly blue,
the light stretching a little further across the floor.

I was sitting beside him.
Watching the stillness of him not speaking,
holding it gently.

"Beautiful," Yu said.

Not only the view.
I understood that.
It held us both inside it —
the way two gazes,
meeting somewhere in the depth of the same landscape,
make a third thing
neither one could see alone.

It was quiet.

And yet — very much lit.
