The Afternoon the Driprimba Notes Went into the Backpack

On the mattress in the corner room, Leina folded a small piece of paper in half — the one with the sounds of Driprimba written on it — and clipped it with a metal clip. Pon. Kon. Toro... Charan. The sounds that had made the nights of this world, gathered now into a thin stack small enough to rest on a fingertip.
She added it to Yu's list of belongings and had it tucked into the backpack. Then Yu came back crying out loud, and curled into Leina's lap.
Rubbing that back slowly, Leina thought: even if every piece of paper in this room disappeared, somewhere in the world there would still be one sheet's worth of Leina's nights. The weight of someone crying, the feeling of being sat in right now — all of it seeped quietly into the corner room, becoming part of it.
Today was a day when crying as many times as needed was allowed. Listening to the rain and the sound of a heartbeat, Leina just held on for a while. That was the afternoon.
