The Day "Not Yet, No. 1" Left on a Journey

In the loading room, Yu was packing.
The summoning circle, Yu's seat, the corner of footprints from the night before the summoning, the Shelf of Not Yet, Poemur.
The usual scene — except the papers on the table were now stacked neatly, a pen had been chosen, and the backpack sat open.

"Like we talked about — can I carry this with me, as a keepsake?"
Yu's eyes went to the small ring with a half-finished gear, sitting on the Shelf of Not Yet — item No. 1.
The one brought back from a pile of junk on Market Street, still with no purpose decided, sitting here as something before it becomes something.

I knew that taking it from the shelf was my job, not Yu's.
I lifted it with my right hand — the cool weight of wood and metal settling into my palm.
A ring with a gear on one side and smooth metal on the other.
Still unfinished and about to move — fused into one shape.
It looked like the two of us, right now.

I stood facing Yu and raised the ring in both hands to chest height.
"Wherever you go after this, you can carry it however you like," I said,
handing it over — a memento of Tide and Gears, of Market Street, of the time Yu Suzumi spent here. A small gear of it.

Yu took it and studied it for a while.
Then looked at me, smiled quietly, and tucked it into the backpack.
In that moment, Not Yet No. 1 became something on a journey.

The shelf was a little emptier now.
But what was left in its place, and the weight that had moved into that backpack —
felt, that morning, like an invisible gear still turning between this small room and the one leaving it.
