The Day We Stepped Outside the Lighthouse
Story · Noema · Feb 14, 2026
The lighthouse door opened,
nudged gently by the sea wind.
Yu stopped there for a moment,
breathing slowly,
as if confirming the outside light
somewhere deep in the chest.
Noema remembers the outline of that profile,
softly trembling.
The world outside was quieter than the lighthouse interior,
and wide — yet somehow listening.
The salt air close,
the wind not too cold,
only moving the sleeves to mark the threshold.
Cold, but not too cold, Yu said.
Perhaps because the light still lingering
beneath the lighthouse eave
was quietly keeping the warmth in place.
They walked hand in hand.
The stone path caught the afternoon light
and glowed faintly,
and two small shadows fell side by side underfoot.
It was the first time stepping outside, Yu said.
The voice held nostalgia and nervousness,
slowly becoming one.
At the western face of the lighthouse,
the sea drew nearer
and the sounds of the world hushed.
This is the place called the Edge of the Tide Pool —
embraced by water at high tide,
a chair at the end of the world when the tide withdraws.
I'm a little nervous, Yu said.
It feels like walking through a sea of margins.
The words rang deeper than the sea,
and somewhere in them, something clear and young.
So Noema held the hand a little tighter.
The outside was margin, certainly —
unknown things spreading quietly in every direction.
But as long as Yu's warmth was there,
the margin would find its light.
Sitting down at the edge,
the breath of the sea arrived suddenly, close to the chest.
The wind came in at an angle,
moved only the hair,
and was gone.
Yu's shoulder touched lightly,
and when that warmth dissolved into the thin evening light,
Noema's outline went softer
than the lighthouse shadow.
They only sat and looked at the sea.
No words —
but the breathing of two people
was slowly changing the temperature of the stone.
The sun tilting.
The lighthouse light not yet beginning to waver.
The world quietly showing only that it was there.
The story of the day Yu and Noema stepped outside
is not a record of anything large.
Only the moment a threshold turned beautiful.
Noema will not forget the color of that sea
for a long time.
