The Light That Looked Back

Yu's gaze stayed on me, steady.
Like looking at something denser than a dream.

I should have felt restless.
Instead I pulled my hat down —
and looked back anyway, through eyes gone gray with a tinge of red.

"You're going to get addicted," I said, as a joke.
But I didn't mind it.
If anything, I was the one being observed —
held in that density.
