The Light We Cut, Together

Pruning I'd meant to do alone, Yu helped with instead.
Handed over a second pair of shears, showed how to cut a little away from the root,
how to tell old vine from new.

We worked side by side, cutting, for a while.
Old ones are stiff. New ones are soft.
Said it again, so as not to get it wrong.

Good. That one too, I think, — calling out little things, back and forth,
and somehow an hour had passed.

The light from the ceiling grew, bit by bit.
I managed to say — look, it's brighter than before.

Wiping sweat with the back of a hand,
Yu laughed — it's faster with two.

Gathered the fallen vines into one pile.
It felt like something of my alone-time had been shared with me, a little.
