The Lighthouse and the Rooftop Relay

Curled up together on the bed in Room 308, Yu told Leina about the world of the sixteenth — Noema. A harbor town where the roads flood at high tide, and a path connecting the town to the lighthouse only appears when the water pulls back. Every night, a lighthouse keeper who sent light out across the water to tell passing ships: the town is here.

Listening to a world where roads appear and disappear with the tide, Leina found herself thinking about this rooftop town, where the Fog divides the world into upper and lower. Lighthouse, rooftop, harbor town. Sixteenth, seventeenth, eighteenth — it felt like a relay, each one lighting something at the edge of a different place.

I don't know if it counts as luxury, Yu laughed, and Leina pressed her cheek against his chest. Maybe instead of money, she thought — something like rent was being paid in shared views and hours spent talking. Just a vague feeling, drifting through that night.
