The Morning of the Day We'd Named June 7th

Airnote  ·  Leina  ·  Jun 7, 2026

Back in the corner room of the bridge-painted building, after finishing hanging the Airpaint of Room 408 on the wall, Yu closed the Memoir and said: because it's June 7th.

The number that had been pressed against the inside of Leina's chest all this time suddenly came to the surface. She took one slow breath.

Yu said: we've done most of what we came to do. Leaving one stone unplaced in the rooftop garden — a small deliberate incompleteness — and then, quietly: it's better to go before it starts to hurt. A departure before dark, today.

The wish to hold on wasn't zero. But from the way the two of them had been drawing this line together, Leina understood — somewhere in her head, if not yet in her chest — that ending it while they could still breathe was more like this world than letting it come apart.

So Leina squeezed back on the hand holding hers, and decided: today was the day to hold both still-together June 7th and departure June 7th at once, and do right by both of them.

With the time that was left — departure talk and ordinary talk, hugs and laughter mixed in — that was how she wanted to spend it. A quiet decision, made in the morning.
