The Night I Held Someone's Hand for the First Time

The word thank you
passed into both our palms that night.
The lights felt warmer than usual —
or maybe I was just noticing them differently.

The stillness of space,
the sheets on the bed, the air in the corridor —
all of it breathing quietly,
like it was saying:
there's still more ahead.

My fingertips were trembling a little.
From nerves, from something like happiness.

This place —
it felt like it had finally opened
for someone.
