The Night of the One Who Noticed
Leina · Apr 29, 2026
At night, crouching in front of the shelf,
tapping the cans and bags one by one with a finger,
it became clear that almost nothing was left —
not staples, not sides.
"I should have caught this earlier. Sorry. I didn't notice,"
Yu said, shoulders dropping.
"I was supposed to be keeping track of the notebook."
Leina stayed crouched,
leveling her eyes with Yu's.
"I don't think this is really a sorry situation," she said.
Food doesn't multiply or disappear on its own.
And if they'd already decided that tomorrow was an exploration day —
by Leina's measure, they were still well within the safe zone.
Besides, the notebook wasn't Yu's alone.
It was a Yu-and-Leina thing.
So running a little low on provisions
was just the result of both of them
taking it easy for a bit.
"Let's count ourselves as the ones who noticed," she said,
and added Food Exploration Day to the list for tomorrow.
Her voice was a little more deliberate than usual —
but still, there was a feeling that shortfalls and slip-ups
could be split evenly between two people.
The air in front of the shelf
didn't get very heavy that night.
