The Night We Promised "Karimatra Food" Like a First Paycheck

In Lysa's room at night, curled together on the futon, Yu said: I want to eat something Karimatra-ish tomorrow.

The small diner off the market street came to mind right away. The one where fishermen and cargo automaton operators come and go. The one where fish and spice and bread from some far-off country all end up on the same plate. Something in Lysa's chest quietly lit up: that place.

Not like I've done enough work to deserve a first paycheck, Yu laughed.

It's a presence bonus, Lysa said.

Because someone summoned by black magic had been here — sleeping, writing in a notebook, coming along to the warehouse, and now lying here doing this — and that alone felt like more than enough.

Tomorrow: the diner, the first-real-meal-plus-you-made-it set, together. With a side promise of being asked is it good? more than once.

The smile that came with yeah was already halfway carrying tomorrow into the room, and the air inside the futon turned softly into the smell of the day ahead.
