The Rooftop After Yu Left, When the Sunset Came Through

After Yu disappeared through the door, only the usual rain and wind remained on the rooftop. The sound of the door closing was small — but inside Leina's chest, it landed like a single book falling over in a wide, quiet room.

She stood there for a while, unable to move. Then the rain stopped, just like that. She looked up. Through a gap in the heavy clouds, a single line of sunset light came down and touched the wet concrete, turning it faintly orange.

A color this town almost never shows.

Leina stepped one foot into the light and felt the small warmth settle onto her sneaker. I hope there's light like this where you're going too, she said — quietly, to no one in particular.

When she turned around, the door to the corner room was there, looking as if nothing had happened. In her pocket: the waterproof notebook, and the pages of Driprimba sounds, not yet torn out.

With the sunset at her back, Leina made one decision — go back to the corner room — and took hold of the doorknob, the same weight as always. The first step back into a world without Yu was quiet. But it was real, and it made the floor sound.
