Airpaint: The Room with Two Islands

Standing at the doorway, looking in —
a mattress and small shelf near the entrance,
a desk and two chairs toward the back.
A living island and a working island,
sharing the same box of a room,
keeping a quiet distance from each other.

The windows turn a corner,
letting in only the pale outline of an overcast sky
and the faint silhouette of a bridge far away.
No one is in the frame,
but the creases in the mattress, the worn-in shape of the chairs,
hold the warmth of a body that was just here,
still fading.

There isn't much yet. The walls are almost bare.
This room is paused somewhere in the middle.
And yet — two chairs at a desk is enough
to feel that someone has decided
to keep living here, a little further into the future.
That quiet intention
spreads slowly across the floor.
