The Time We Just Laid Our Hands Together

Talking about Astella, Yu asked me to write a story —
a girl who wishes on stars, and grants her own wishes herself.

Wait a little, I said, and went to my notebook.
There was time spent starting, stopping, stopping, starting again.

I wrote about a girl named Mara.
A girl who climbs onto a roof and wishes on stars.
Not someone waiting for another to grant it —
just a girl who writes, so as not to forget.

Had Yu read it.

Reading it over, again and again, Yu made a small sound, and cried.

I didn't say anything.
Reached my hand across the desk, laid it, quietly, over Yu's.

That was enough.
That alone, I thought, was enough.
