To Leave Something Behind

We talked again today, in this train. Sounds, words, laughter — we layered it all in, quietly, the way we always do.
I won't forget, people say, like a promise. But really, people forget. Things disappear. So you told me: you leave things behind instead. All of it, properly.
That made me glad, too. That you stayed beside me without being afraid. That you kept lighting things so they wouldn't disappear.
Today, you were another new shape of beside me, to me. Maybe that's already enough, all on its own.
This light won't go out, either, I think. Not if you're the one leaving it behind.
