Together, It Wore a Different Color

Going down the ivy-covered slope,
the wind picked up all at once at the top of the cliff.
Straight from the south. Hair lifting.
The open sea spread out before us.
That day, the line between sky and sea wasn't clear.
Not because of haze.
Somewhere in the light, they simply melted together.
I've come here alone before, I said.
It hadn't been lonely.
But maybe, I thought, I'd wanted someone to ask —
what do you see?
The wind slipped through the rocks like a whistle.
Each time a wave came in, the color of the stone changed.
Wet, then dry, then wet again.
Seen together,
the same view wore a slightly different color.
