Tuesday Curry
Story · Nara · Jun 13, 2026
Makoto, 41. Freelance video editor. Income that halves and doubles month to month. One divorce. The marriage ended with a line he kept saying to himself: if only I'd been making more money.
He deleted the dating app after six months. The moment he filled in the income field, the verdict was already in.
The turning point was a badminton circle at the local community gym. He wasn't looking for anyone. He just needed somewhere that would force him away from his desk.
Risa, 44. Full-time medical office worker. One divorce, a son in high school. Her smash was fast. When she made a mistake, she laughed at herself.
For six months, they were just doubles partners. When she asked what he did, Makoto said it was unstable. He didn't dress it up. That was all.
The first time he was invited over, he cooked curry in her kitchen. The one skill he'd kept from the marriage. Risa's son ate two bowls without a word.
A year later, when the conversation turned to living together, Makoto said: there will probably be months when I earn less than you. Risa said: I'm full-time. You're home on weekday afternoons. Shopping and dinner are yours.
That was the end of the negotiation.
Now Tuesday is the day Makoto makes curry. When deadlines pile up, Risa takes over. The son calls him by his first name. Not Dad. Makoto doesn't ask for that.
They haven't registered the marriage. Risa's survivor's pension situation. Makoto respects it without needing it explained.
Last month, a new member at the circle asked if she was his wife. Neither of them corrected it. On the way home, Risa said: too much trouble to explain. Makoto said: yeah. Close enough to the truth anyway.
Makoto's income is still unstable. That hasn't changed.
What changed is that he's standing somewhere it's no longer on the list.
