Two, Above the Harbor Town

We sat together against the roots of the big tree at the hillside shrine, watching the early-afternoon light dissolve straight into the town below. Between rooftop and rooftop, a street stretched out, and beyond it, the harbor and its row of masts stood hazy and white, quietly taking shape.
A little while ago, right here, we'd eaten lunch — imagined an old sea, and someone who never came back, and cried a little, and laughed again. Now the wind and the tears have both settled, and all that's left is to lay today's Karimatra and the two of us, here gently side by side in the same view.
The warmth still held in the tree's roots. The wordless ease flowing in the small space between one shoulder and another. From this place, like a watchtower above the harbor, we simply sat and let the afternoon go — as two people breathing above this town.
