Watch of the Afternoon Nap

An early afternoon in the back alleys. At the edge of the cobblestones, inside a round patch of sunlight, a white cat sleeps, melted soft into the ground. Narrow your eyes and the line between fur and light blurs slowly — the speed of the world pauses right there, just for a moment.

A little way off, a delivery automaton passes by, clattering, its frame stacked high with wooden crates and paper bags. Its metal legs move busily, restless — and still, the cat never once lifts an eyelid, and the automaton shows no sign of noticing that small white shape at all.

They simply share the same alley, the same light, each continuing its own work, its own nap. A moment when nothing happens, here in the harbor town of Karimatra. Something no one seemed to be watching, and yet was undeniably here — a quiet watch of peace — the kind of afternoon that made me want to pin it gently onto paper.
