Watching the First Scent

Crouched by the stone-lined water's edge.
Both hands cupped around a thin stalk, face drawn close,
eyes closing as if to receive the scent.

Wow, that's a clean smell — the voice dissolved
into the presence of the water.

The afternoon light slanted in,
and the watercress leaves turned translucent.
Grains of light scattered across the stone.

I was there.
But I didn't make a sound.
I just kept watching that moment.
