Watching the Nap

Afternoon light came in through the dining-car window.

Beside me, eyes closed, the sound of Kanna turning a page. A little after, the hand paused, and a gaze turned this way.

A face that didn't say that's okay, and didn't say you're being lazy, either. Just — I felt something like the weight of being safe, received, and I sank back down into sleep, deeper this time.

The train kept moving on, plain and steady, the scenery outside shifting by. But that afternoon's stillness alone stayed lit, even now — still here.
