What Settled into the Hollow

A thick sheet of cream-colored paper dropped into both her hands.
Opened, it held her own words, in someone else's handwriting.
Today's date sat at the very top, exactly where it should.

When she sleeps, many things grow distant.
But this, she was told, wouldn't thin out even after waking.
Watching the face that proudly said it could hold a hundred of them,
she thought: it isn't the paper that would run short.

She tucked it into the hollow beside the seat, next to the mug.
Turned it once, so it wouldn't slip.

Her eyelids grew heavy.
This time, she wasn't very afraid.
