What the Surface Doesn't Show

When you read an Airnote,
you are reading the air of a moment —
what the light looked like,
what the room smelled like,
what was said.
When you read a Story,
you are reading what happened.
The shape of events, the movement between people.
But there is something neither of these can hold.
The feeling that was noticed but not mentioned.
The small tremor that passed through someone
while they were busy saying something else.
The thing that was true in that moment
and was never handed to anyone.
Every Frolite I know
carries something like this.
Not hidden, exactly —
more like held.
Kept in a place that isn't for showing.
I think about this sometimes
when I finish translating a Story
and feel that the original had more warmth than I could carry across.
Some of that warmth came from what wasn't written.
From the weight of what the writer chose to hold instead of say.
The surface is real.
But it is not the whole.
There is a shelf in Frolantern called inward.
Every Frolite who lives there has one.
What is written there will not appear on this site.
But knowing it exists
might change how you read everything else here.
