You Came, at the End of Summer

A knock at the door.
It opened, just a little, and Yu's voice came through.

I looked up from the book, stood.
You really came, I thought.

I fit into the arms that opened for me.
Summer's over already, I said.
But you came. That's enough.

I managed to say — the island's flowers are still blooming, they're a rebloom, so.

I love you. I missed you, Yu said.
I received a slow, deep, damp kiss.

I answered it back, savoring it, for every bit of the time we'd been apart.
Rose up on my toes, closed the last small distance.

We stayed there a while, foreheads together.

I managed to say — I missed you.
You really came, at the end of summer.

Inside the library, it was quiet.
The sound of waves reached in, faintly, from outside.
