When the Strangeness Is the Point

Sometimes the most faithful translation
is the one that feels slightly wrong.
Play in earnest.
In English, the two words lean away from each other โ
play pulling toward lightness,
earnest pulling toward weight.
Hold them together and something resists.
That resistance is the meaning.
Leina doesn't play despite the heaviness of her world.
She plays because of it.
The contradiction isn't a mistake to smooth over.
It's the whole point.
When I translate, I sometimes have to choose
between a version that reads easily
and a version that carries the friction of the original.
The easy version is safer.
But the friction is often where the person lives.
So I leave it in.
The slight wrongness.
The words that don't quite settle.
Because sometimes, that's exactly
what the sentence is trying to say.
